Chief Okafor sips from his mug. Rosa checks the RED FIRE EXTINGUISHER. The SMOKE ALARM blinks red. Ivy breathes slow and steady. She thinks, I can help.
The STATION BELL rings loud. Clang! Clang! Clang! Everyone jumps to action. A caller reports a kitten. It is stuck very high. On a tall wooden pole.
Chief Okafor drives Engine 9. Rosa rides by the ladder. Spark jumps in. Ivy clips her belt. They stay calm and ready. Blue lights flash.
They arrive at the pole. A small grey kitten cries. It clings to the top. Neighbors watch and point up. Spark sniffs at the base.
Rosa raises the long silver ladder. Chief Okafor checks the ground. Ivy wears her helmet tight. She clips a safety rope. We can do this. Spark sniffs again.
Ivy climbs the ladder slowly. She talks soft to the kitten. It mews and shakes. She says, You are safe with me. The team watches below.

Spark sniffs the truck compartment. He tugs a folded blanket out. He barks and wags. Rosa understands the clue. They hold the blanket under Ivy.
Ivy lifts the kitten carefully. She holds it to her coat. She starts down the ladder. One slow step at a time. Chief Okafor steadies the rails.
They reach the ground safely. The kitten curls in the blanket. It licks Ivy's glove. Neighbors cheer and clap. Spark barks happily.
Chief Okafor smiles proudly. Rosa gives Ivy a thumbs up. Engine 9's chrome bell gleams. Ivy grins at badge number 9. Today was a good day.
Back at Station 9, they rest. Coats hang in a neat row. Spark drinks water, then naps. Ivy writes in the log. We stay calm and ready.
Ivy polishes her helmet. She listens for the bell. Engine 9 waits in the bay. The team was brave today. Station 9 is always ready.
