Sun fills the bright town. Today is mini triathlon day. The sports centre shines blue and red. Max bounces, excited beside Jo.
Max wears his red number seven jersey. Navy shorts and white trainers. Blue goggles on his forehead. He feels eager and unsure.
Jo points to three parts today. Swim the blue pool. Roll the blue skateboard. Run the red track. Max nods and grins.
At the blue pool, Max shakes. Jo blows her silver whistle. She shows one simple trick. Long arms and big kicks.
Max pushes the wall and swims. He is swimming one width. He splashes, then glides, then wiggles. Jo cheers from the side.
Now they go to the court. Max wears his red helmet. Green knee pads on. Jo says, Bend knees, eyes forward.
Max rolls on his blue skateboard. Yellow wheels turn under him. He is rolling and gliding. He wobbles, then steadies.
Now they go to the track. Max sets the board aside. He ties his laces tight. Light steps, pump arms, says Jo.
Max starts running on the red track. He is running, pumping arms. He puffs, but keeps going. Jo jogs beside him, smiling.
Max reaches the line and stops. He tries each part with energy. He is tired but grinning. Jo blows her silver whistle.
At the finish table, Jo smiles. She gives Max a gold medal. It hangs from a red ribbon. Max holds it, smiling.
Max grins a big grin. Now he knows his real sport. His sport is trying everything. Jo hugs him tight.
