Sun shines on the town. The green football pitch is bright. Max wears a red number seven. Jo has her whistle.
Max holds a black and white football. His blue goggles sit up. He feels eager and bouncy.
Max wants the ball for himself. He dribbles alone. He keeps it. He does not pass. Jo runs beside him.
His foot slips on grass. Max trips and falls. The ball rolls away. Max groans. He feels small and sad.
Jo blows her silver whistle. She smiles. She says, Pass the ball. Passing is better than hogging. We play as a team.
Jo shows a short pass. She taps the ball. The ball rolls to Max. Max stops it. He smiles and nods.
Max and Jo practice passing. Max kicks to Jo. Jo passes it back. Kick, stop, pass, again. The ball moves between them.
They keep going. Sun is warm. Grass smells good. Max breathes fast. He is learning. He feels strong. Jo claps and cheers.
Now Max dribbles with care. He looks up. Jo waits near goal. Max thinks, I can pass. He pushes the ball.
Max passes to Jo. The ball rolls on. Jo swings her leg. She kicks hard. The ball flies in. The net jumps.
Goal! Max cheers and laughs. He gives Jo a high five. Sharing the ball works better. Team play feels good.
Jo blows her whistle once. Max grins wide. His blue goggles sit up. Sun stays bright. I try, I learn, Max says.
