Today our plane lands in Cairo. The sun is golden. Dad smiles in his pilot cap. I grip my red backpack tight.
Warm air hugs us outside. Palm trees wave hello. A sign says Salam. Yesterday we were home. Today we are brave travelers.
Dad says we can see pyramids. Sand shimmers beyond the city. I check my yellow-strap camera. We walk toward the tall camels.
A guide lifts me up carefully. The camel rises slowly, very tall. Dad walks beside us, smiling. Great stone pyramids glow in sun.
We stop to rest in shade. I climb down and wander. Warm sand feels soft and wide. I turn. I can't see Dad.
I call, Dad! Sand and wind answer. A girl waves from nearby dunes. She wears an orange headscarf. She says, I can help.
She is Nour. Her eyes are kind. We walk back over warm ridges. Soon Dad is near again. I wave and shout hello.
Dad thanks Nour with a smile. We drink cool water together. Cairo sun is hot and bright. The pyramids look close and strong.
Nour says we can sail later. We walk to the Nile. A small wooden felucca waits. Its white sail rests like a wing.
Wind fills the sail. The boat glides. The Nile is wide and blue. The city passes slowly. Bridges and palms slide by.
A cool river breeze lifts us. A white bird stands near water. We hear soft ripples. Cairo feels calm from the boat.
I hold my camera with care. Three big pyramids rise ahead. I snap a photo. Click! Dad and Nour smile beside me.
We sail back as the sun lowers. On shore, we say thank you. Shukran, Nour. She laughs, You are welcome. We all wave goodbye.
Today Cairo is in my travel book. Dad tucks a tiny paper pyramid. We were lost, but we are okay. Hello, Big City. Good night, Cairo.
