Today Omar and Dad land in Istanbul. The sky is sunny and blue. Omar hugs his red plane backpack. His yellow-strap camera bumps his chest.
People smile and say Merhaba. Dad wears his navy pilot uniform. He tucks a tiny souvenir inside his cap. Omar waves and says hello back.
They walk to the busy ferry dock. Gulls cry over the blue water. Dad buys tickets for a white ferry. Omar can ride by the rail.
The white ferry rumbles across the strait. Wind lifts Omar's hair. They see bridges and round domes. A man sells hot tea in glasses.
They reach the Grand Bazaar today. Yesterday they were at home. Now the bazaar is bright and busy. Colors glow and spices smell warm.
Inside, lanterns hang like stars. Scarves flow in bright rivers. Bowls shine in neat stacks. Soaps smell like lemons.
Omar looks at beads and lamps. He turns and loses his way. He can't see Dad's pilot cap. Omar stops, breathes, and waits bravely.
A girl sees him and smiles. She says, Merhaba. I am Elif, she says. I can help. Take my hand. Her black hair is in two braids.
Elif holds his hand in the maze. She wears a teal dress today. They find Dad near a lamp stall. Dad smiles and thanks Elif.
Now they all walk together. Elif says, We can see the Blue Mosque. Blue domes rise beyond old trees. Pigeons flap across the wide square.
The domes are round and blue. Tall minarets point up to sky. Today the stone is warm under feet. Omar says, Hello, big city.
A soft ginger street cat curls on wall. Its fur is warm orange, with faint stripes. It has a white chest and paws. Green eyes watch the square.
The cat's tail curls long and soft. Omar lifts his camera on a yellow strap. Click. He takes a happy photo. Thank you, Elif, Omar says.
Today was big, bright, and brave. Dad says, Time to go, captain. They wave goodbye to kind Elif. Omar can't wait for the next city.
