Today we arrive in warm Marrakech by plane. Dad wears his navy pilot uniform. I carry my red airplane backpack. My yellow-strap camera hangs ready.
We ride a horse carriage through town. The driver clicks, the horse trots. I wave and say hello. Today the sun is bright.
We step into the market maze, the souk. Stalls line tiny twisty lanes. Spices color the air bright orange. Drums tap. Voices sing and call.
Dad checks a small map by lanterns. I look at blue bowls and carpets. My camera clicks. The lanes twist like a puzzle.
I turn left, then right, then stop. Dad is not here with me. The market maze feels very big. I breathe slowly and stay brave.
A boy smiles beside a basket stall. He wears a cream tunic. A small red cap sits straight. He says, Hello, I am Yusuf.
I say, Hello, I am Omar. I am lost in the souk. Can you help me find Dad? Yusuf nods. We walk together.
Yusuf knows the twisty lanes well. He points left, then right. We pass leather bags and bright lamps. We follow drum beats and orange smells.
A tall tower rises over the roofs. Yusuf says, That is Koutoubia tower. The tower helps people find the way. We walk toward the open square.
There is Dad beside an orange tree. He waves and smiles wide. I was worried. Now I am okay. Thank you, Yusuf, I say.
Yusuf shows a small tiled fountain nearby. Blue tiles shine like water sky. We dip fingers. The water is cool. Street birds sip and flutter up.
Evening comes to the big square. We sit by a glowing lantern. A robed storyteller begins his tale. His voice rises. The drum answers.
I whisper, Salaam, and people smile back. Mint tea steams. Sweet cakes smell warm. Yesterday we were at home. Today we are here together.
I lift my camera and take a photo. The lively market shines in the frame. Dad tucks a tiny lantern souvenir. Goodbye, Marrakech, we say. See you again.
