Post landed on the basket rim with a letter. He paused, puffed, then tripped like a hero. He crashed into Ruby's hood. Captain Vega laughed and caught him. Ruby saved the tiny red tube.
Ruby opened the letter from Dr. Adeyemi. It said, Boats scare gray whales. A silent balloon could follow them. Please help me count them. The whales move down the coast. I need careful eyes.
Every voyage begins this way. Post brings a letter. Then the Skylark waits, patched red and gold. Captain Vega reads the wind. She licks one finger and grins. Ruby packs the journal and maps.
We rose at dawn and floated toward the coast. Sea light winked between clouds. Gulls flew below us. The burner whispered warm breath. Post rode the rim, proud again. The wind carried us west.
Dr. Adeyemi waved from the shore. Her team waited with charts. She climbed into the basket with care. She said, Thank you for your help. I record, you two watch. Together we follow whales.
We lifted again and drifted above the whale road. Gray whales moved like mountains below. Boats scared them before, but our balloon stayed quiet. We kept our distance. The whales breathed and traveled south.
Ruby counted spouts and called numbers. Eleven. Twelve. Thirteen. She sketched flukes in the journal. Dr. Adeyemi marked each one on her sheet. Captain Vega held the course. Post pecked crumbs and listened.
The sea unrolled like satin. Kelp beds drifted past. Spouts rose and fell. Our burner stayed low because of the whales. They swam steady and calm. We followed, quiet as cloud shadows over water.
In the afternoon, fog slid in from the sea. The world turned white and still. The shore vanished. Even gulls fell quiet. Captain Vega checked the flame and frowned. We hung between gray sky and gray water.
Then a deep sound rose through the fog. It echoed up, slow and clear. Whale song found us. It felt like a lantern of sound. We listened and felt brave again. The song guided our waiting.
Captain Vega read the wind again. She licked one finger and tested the air. She kept the flame low, short and soft. We drifted slowly and safely. Post tucked his head under one wing.
The fog thinned, then lifted. Ocean glittered below us again. A mother gray whale surfaced right below. Her small calf rose beside her. The calf rolled one eye up at the red balloon.
The eye looked curious, dark and kind. It felt like a giant hello. Ruby whispered, Hello, little traveler. Dr. Adeyemi smiled and wrote quickly. Captain Vega nodded, eyes bright. We all held our breath.
The pair dove together. Two flukes lifted like flags and waved. Ruby drew their shapes fast. Dr. Adeyemi counted more spouts. Fourteen. Fifteen. Sixteen. We filled a whole page with whales and notes.
All day we followed the coast road of whales. Sunlight slid across waves. Tall cliffs watched us pass. At last Dr. Adeyemi said, We have enough. Your help made this count possible. Thank you.
We landed near her team at dusk. People cheered. Dr. Adeyemi showed our notes and tallies. She said, Gray whales remember their road. They follow it each year. The coast is their long guide.
Captain Vega cooled the burner. We folded the bright envelope. Ruby opened the voyage journal. She pasted in a sketch of flukes. Post blinked from the frame. The sky deepened to purple. Stars pricked the water.
At last Ruby glued a new stamp into place. A gray tail. The day closed soft and blue. Post fell asleep on the burner frame. Captain Vega smiled. The Skylark rested, ready for tomorrow's winds.
