Post the homing pigeon lands on the basket rim. He carries a letter. He crash lands into Vega's coat pocket. Ruby laughs and lifts him out. The note invites them to the Great Map Makers Fair.
They ready the Skylark, a patched red and gold balloon. Vega checks ropes and the burner. Ruby packs the voyage journal and cocoa tin. Post rides the rim, chest proud, white feather bright.
Morning wind lifts them over farms and rivers. They read the wind and smile. By noon they spot bright tents and charts. The Map Makers Fair buzzes with voices and songs.
An elder named Linn greets them by the gate. Her letter asked for a sky wind test. Vega and Ruby lift the balloon above the tents. They follow her chart and mark true winds.
The test works, and the crowd claps and cheers. Linn thanks them with a silver cloud stamp. Ruby tucks it safe in the journal pocket. By late day they lift again for home.
Ruby sees Thornwood Hills and begs for a shortcut. The path over the hills looks so close. Vega studies the west and slowly nods. Just this once, she agrees to try it.
But the western sky grows tall, dark, bruise colored. The air turns still and feels electric. Ruby stares and grips the basket rim. Post ruffles, then hides inside Ruby's hood.
Ruby wants to push on, because home feels close. Vega says, Ruby must read the sky herself. Ruby licks a finger, like Vega always does. The wind is wrong, and her stomach knots.
Ruby whispers they should turn back. She does not want to, but she does. Vega grins and nods at her brave choice. The clouds build fast, so they run east. They vent heat and run east with the wind.
The gray wall rolls after them across the hills. The basket bumps as gusts kick the balloon. They scan for a field and a safe barn. A farmer waves from a wide, mown field.
Vega calls, Rope down, and points to the barn. Ruby tosses the drop line to the farmer. He runs and snags it on a stout post. They spill air and lower the red and gold.
Fat rain explodes around the barn and field. They pull silk down and tie every rope. Wind shoves, but the net and stakes hold. They bolt inside the barn with the farmer.
Rain drums the roof while they climb to the loft. Ruby opens the cocoa tin and pours three mugs. Steam curls in the sweet, warm hay smell. Vega says, Brave pilots are old pilots, remember.
Ruby nods and sips her cocoa. Her hands still shake, but her heart feels light. She says she felt the warning in her stomach. Vega smiles and says that is brave reading.
After a while, the rain slows and the wind drops. Clouds split, and evening light washes the fields. They thank the farmer and share brown bread. He teaches Ruby the name of each hill.
They pack the wet ropes and check each knot. Steam rises as the burner warms the silk. In calm air they lift toward home again. Post dries, then naps on the burner frame.
At dusk they land by their tiny shed. Ruby opens the journal on her knees. She glues in the silver cloud stamp from Linn. Post sleeps on the burner frame, one wing cocked.
Vega hugs Ruby and says she is proud. Turning back can be the bravest choice, she says. Ruby strokes the stamp and writes, Race the Storm. The Skylark creaks, and home feels safe and bright.
