It is Dad's birthday morning. The sun shines. Ruby whispers, 'Pancakes for Dad.' Nina smiles.
Ruby is tiny. Dad is giant. He sleeps. Ruby says, 'Giant breakfast for giant Dad.' Nina nods.
They tiptoe to the kitchen. The table looks small. They find a huge pan. We can make a giant pancake.
They pour flour. It makes a mountain. Ruby climbs. She slips inside. She pops out white like a ghost.
They crack too many eggs. Eggs splash. Yolks slide like suns. Nina wipes Ruby's face. Ruby giggles. Nina laughs.
Milk pours. Sugar sprinkles. They mix and mix. The bowl shakes. Batter climbs up. Ruby stirs with both hands.
The pan heats. Nina lifts Ruby high. Ruby rides on Nina's shoulders. She greases the pan carefully. Steam rises.
They pour batter. It spreads wide. It is big like the table. Nina flips. The pancake turns. One side burns.
Dad wakes. He follows the smell. He is giant in the doorway. The kitchen is a happy disaster.
Dad sits. He eats every bite. 'Best pancake in the world,' he says. He gives Ruby the last piece.
The piece is bigger than Ruby's head. Ruby beams. Nina laughs. Dad laughs. They clean the kitchen together, still smiling.
