The Puzzle Patrol meets in the shed. They live on Maple Street. They have a blue casebook. Waffles naps beside them.
Yesterday the corner house door was blue. Today the door is green. Nobody sees a painter. There is no paint smell.
The Patrol investigates the strange green door. They walk to the corner house. They knock and listen. Waffles waddles along slowly.
A neighbor opens the green door. I am Mr. Sen, he says. I do not paint it, he says. I smell no paint.
Zoe studies the door edges. Marco sketches the door. Kiki kneels at the doormat. She finds green dust. Waffles naps there.
Marco looks around the small garden. He touches the brick wall. The same green dust is there. He circles it in his sketch.
Zoe looks up above the door. A big tree spreads wide branches. Fine green pollen drifts down. Dew at night glues it on.
They get a bucket of soapy water. Marco dips a sponge. They wash one corner gently. Bright blue shines through the green.
They ask the next neighbor about the tree. She says the tree drops pollen. It falls every spring. It paints cars and steps green.
The Patrol shows the washed corner. Mr. Sen laughs and nods. He says, I like both colors. The door is half green, half blue.
Back in the garden shed, they write notes. They draw the tree and door. Waffles snores on the green doormat clue. Everyone laughs softly.
Zoe stamps the blue casebook. They all say, Case closed! They share apple slices and cookies. Waffles gets a crumb and purrs.
Tomorrow it can look green again. The tree keeps dropping pollen. Mr. Sen smiles at the door. Maple Street feels bright and friendly.
