Clover Lane is a friendly street. Houses lean a little and smile. Window boxes hold bright flowers. Ruby and Jay live here. Biscuit the dog lives here too.
At the corner stands a tiny library box. It is free to use. Neighbors share books inside the little door. Mr. Chen cares for the box.
Lately, the books move each night. Cookbooks sit upside down each morning. Storybooks stack in funny towers. Mr. Chen is baffled and worried. He smooths shelves again and again.
Ruby and Jay run a small club. They call it The Clover Lane Mysteries. Their shed is the office. Ruby keeps a green clue notebook. Jay wears a magnifying glass.
They plan their first stakeout tonight. They pack a thermos of cocoa. They add blankets and a flashlight. They wait in Ruby's front garden. The tiny box stands nearby.
At dawn, clue one appears. Fine grey hairs cling to a bookmark. Biscuit sniffs for snacks nearby. His sniff puffs the hairs up. He looks very proud.
They peek inside the box again. Clue two waits behind the atlas. There is a small paw sized gap. Cold air moves through it. Ruby writes it in green.
That night, Biscuit acts different. He does not bark at shadows. He whines softly at the box. His nose points to the gap. Ruby notes clue three with stars.
Jay thinks about Mr. Pell. Mr. Pell walks very late sometimes. Maybe he sleepwalked and moved books. They test the idea carefully. They check for prints by moonlight.
The path shows no shoe prints. Flower boxes stay neat and still. Mr. Pell snores by his TV. A soft blue glow fills windows. The theory fails with a sigh.
They settle for a longer watch. Clouds slide by the pale moon. Cocoa stays warm in the thermos. Blankets hug their knees and toes. They whisper and listen for clues.
A soft thump comes from the box. Something slides in the small gap. They hear paper whisper and touch. Jay clicks the flashlight on.
Light spills over a tiny grey cat. She sits in a warm hidden nest. She pushes books into safe walls. Her whiskers twitch like soft brooms.
Biscuit stays calm and wags slowly. He sniffs noses with the cat. Ruby smiles and rubs his ears. The cat blinks and answers with purrs.
They called Mr. Chen right away. He kneels by the box. Hello, little librarian, he says. He adopts her and names her Chapter. He adds a Librarian Cat sign in gold letters.
Back in the shed, Ruby pins the card. The board holds another solved case. Mr. Chen places a soft blanket inside. Biscuit gets a biscuit for helping.
