On Clover Lane, the houses lean and smile. Ruby and Jay run a tiny club. They meet in Ruby's garden shed. Biscuit sniffs boxes and wears a detective scarf.
Morning light warms Clover Lane. Mrs. Okafor sees her door. The faded brown is sky blue now. Tiny white daisies dance over the shiny paint.
Neighbors stop and cheer. Who painted the door? Mrs. Okafor smiles, but wonders. Ruby says a gift is lovely. A mystery still stays a mystery.
In the shed, the cousins begin a case. Ruby opens her green clue notebook. Jay polishes his magnifying glass. Biscuit sits, hopeful, near the biscuit tin.
They walk to Mrs. Okafor's gate. Ruby scans the path for clues. Jay checks the lamppost. Clue one, Ruby says. A blue paint drop shines on the metal.
They follow tiny splashes along the road. The trail stops by a hedge. Jay crouches and looks inside. He lifts a paintbrush bristle. Clue two, Ruby writes carefully.
A bright flyer flaps on a wall. It says Speedy Decorating Company. Ruby calls the number. A bored voice explains the flyer is weeks old. Wrong lead, Jay says gently.
Biscuit sniffs for snacks under hedges. He trots faster, tail high. He stops at Miss Devi's gate. He sneezes blue, then looks very proud. Clue three, Ruby whispers.
Miss Devi is the school art teacher. She is quiet and kind. She loves tiny flowers on cards. Ruby and Jay decide to ask around. They knock on friendly doors.
Mr. Patel says he sees nothing at night. He yawns. Old Mrs. Greene remembers something sweet. She says Mrs. Okafor brings muffins to Miss Devi. Every Friday, warm muffins with daisies on top.
They visit Miss Devi after school. She opens her gate slowly. Ruby thanks her for art lessons. Jay mentions the blue daisies on the door. Miss Devi blushes and looks at her shoes.
She nods. She painted it as a thank you. It is for years of muffins. She is too shy to sign. She painted at night, very quietly.
Ruby and Jay share the secret with Mrs. Okafor. Miss Devi stands nearby, blushing. Mrs. Okafor hugs her and laughs. Thank you for beauty, she says. Let us paint together this weekend.
News spreads along Clover Lane. Neighbors bring brushes and trays. Buckets clink and children giggle. Miss Devi sketches small daisies for everyone. The street plans a painting weekend for bright doors.
By Sunday, Clover Lane blooms like a rainbow. Blue doors shine in the sun. Yellow doors shine, and green doors shine. Tiny daisies smile on every door. Biscuit naps, then checks for crumbs.
Back in the shed, Ruby writes the case card. The Painted Door, she writes neatly. Jay pins it on the cork board. Biscuit gets a biscuit for helping. The cousins grin.
