The Puzzle Patrol meets on Maple Street. They sit in their garden shed. Every evening at six, a toot-toot comes.
They keep a blue casebook for clues. Zoe has a red magnifying glass. Marco draws in his sketchbook. Kiki carries a flashlight.
Today the park has a mystery. A soft toot-toot floats over trees. People look around, but nobody sees who plays.
We can map the sound, says Zoe. Waffles, their orange cat, follows slowly. First they stand by the swings. The toot-toot is very quiet here.
Next they go to the slide. The sound is still quiet. By the sandbox, it grows louder. Near the pond, it is loudest.
Marco draws a sound map in wavy lines. Big waves mean loud. Small waves mean quiet. The pond gets big waves.
They choose a willow near the pond. They hide under it with the casebook. Kiki whispers, It is almost six. Everyone waits very quietly.
Waffles wanders off and flops on a bench. It is the bench across the pond. He naps right where the sound points.
At six exactly, an old man arrives. He says hello to the Patrol. I am Mr. Ito, he says. He sits where Waffles was.
He plays a small wooden flute to ducks. Ducks line up like little fans. Music floats across the water. Everyone listens, even sleepy Waffles.
After the song, Zoe thanks Mr. Ito. He says his grandson is far away. Music helps him feel close today. He plays here every evening.
The Patrol becomes his happy audience. Marco sketches ducks and Mr. Ito. Zoe writes notes in the blue casebook. Kiki checks the time and smiles.
Back at the shed, they stamp the casebook. "Case closed!" they cheer together. They share apple slices and cookies. Waffles purrs. The park feels friendly.
