On Clover Lane, two cousins run a tiny club. Ruby writes clues in her green notebook. Jay studies things with his magnifying glass. Their dog Biscuit wears a little scarf.
Jay wins Spring Kite Day with a red dragon. He keeps it safe in Ruby's shed. This morning, the dragon kite is gone. Jay does not eat breakfast.
The shed door is locked, and the lock shines. No scratches appear on the lock. Ruby looks up at the small skylight. It sits open a tiny crack.
Ruby writes Clue One in her notebook. Jay studies the floor with his glass carefully. Biscuit sniffs for crumbs near the toolbox. They all think about the open skylight.
They step outside and scan the low roof. A long red ribbon hangs from the gutter. Ruby writes Clue Two in neat lines. Jay tugs the ribbon, and it flutters lightly.
Biscuit noses under the fence for crumbs. He trots, then stops by the poplar. His tail goes stiff. He stares up. Ruby writes Clue Three with an underline.
Jay frowns. Maybe Max from the kite club envies Jay. Max admires the bright dragon very much. They decide to ask him, just in case. Biscuit prances, proud of his clever clue.
They knock at Max's small brick house. No one answers. A note hangs inside. It says, I am away all week. The neighbor calls, He is with his gran.
Back at the shed, they sit and think. Ruby remembers a loud storm last night. Wind gusted. Rain rattled the skylight latch. Ruby tests the latch. It feels loose.
Jay points up through the skylight opening. The dragon is light, with a very long ribbon. A storm lifted it out like a kite again. It drifted across to the tall poplar.
They hurry outside and crane their necks. High above, red silk flickers between leaves. The dragon face peeks through shining branches. Biscuit barks, softer than usual, then sits.
Ruby phones Rosa, the firefighter next door. Rosa arrives with a taller ladder and gloves. She climbs carefully. Leaves brush her sleeves. She reaches the kite and frees the knot.
The dragon comes down, but the silk is torn. Jay bites his lip. His eyes shine. Rosa smiles. We can mend it together. Neighbors bring thread, clips, and bright scraps.
They stitch careful patches like bright dragon scales. The dragon grows brighter, bigger, and stronger. Jay thanks everyone, again and again. Biscuit naps under the table, nose twitching.
Back in the shed, Ruby writes the case card. The Vanishing Kite joins the solved board. Jay hangs the mended dragon by the window. Biscuit gets a biscuit for helpful sniffing.
Ruby closes her notebook with a green snap. Jay polishes his magnifying glass and grins. Biscuit poses proudly under the shining kite. New mysteries wait on friendly Clover Lane.
