Every evening at six, a soft whistle drifts. It comes from Number 12, the empty house. Its chimney is crooked. Kids whisper about ghosts. Ruby and Jay begin a new mystery.
Ruby and Jay run a tiny detective club. It is in Ruby's garden shed on Clover Lane. Biscuit the dachshund helps. He wears a scarf. He likes snacks during cases.
At six they stand by Number 12. Ruby wears her mustard raincoat and red clip. Jay wears his striped jumper and glasses. His magnifying glass hangs. The soft whistle rises again.
Small kids whisper, A ghost lives there. Ruby shakes her head. We solve it before bedtime. She chews her pencil. She writes in her green clue notebook. Jay nods hard.
Clue one, says Jay. The whistle loves wind. Today trees sway. Flags flap. The sound is strong. On calm days, no whistle comes. Ruby listens and smiles. Wind is a helper.
Maybe a hidden flute player, says Jay. He looks behind bins. He peeks in hedges. He taps the mailbox. He calls, Hello, musician. No person answers. Ruby laughs kindly at the idea.
Ruby studies the house front. She spots a broken pane. Its shape is like a half moon. Clue two, she writes. She draws the shape. Jay pushes up his sliding glasses.
Ruby holds a leaf near the crack. The whistle grows louder. She moves the leaf away. The whistle grows softer. Air squeezes through. Air sings in thin places. Jay scribbles notes.
Biscuit sniffs for snacks in the garden. The garden is wild and overgrown. He noses under vines. He bumps something hard. He digs excitedly. He finds an old brass kettle. Biscuit looks proud.
Clue three, says Ruby. The kettle has a spout. A spout can whistle. Jay peers at the opening. He holds up his magnifying glass. Ruby grins. Wind, crack, spout. Maybe they sing together.
Jay sets the kettle below the cracked pane. He points the spout up. Ruby waits for a gust. Wind rushes through the crack. Air skims the spout. The whistle turns clear and sweet.
Ruby claps. Simple science, not a ghost, she says. The house and kettle make music. Jay smiles at his flute idea. He bows to Biscuit. Our helper does it again.
Let us share it, says Ruby. At sunset, we invite everyone. Jay calls neighbors. Ruby makes a bright sign. House song at six, it says. Biscuit guards the garden gate importantly.
The sun drops. A breeze starts. Leaves dance. The crack sings. The spout sings. Together they make a clear note. Little kids cheer. No one shivers. Neighbors smile and clap for Number 12.
Back in the shed, Ruby writes the case card. She pins it to the big cork board. The Whistling House, she writes. Biscuit gets a biscuit. The Clover Lane Mysteries continue.
Clover Lane is friendly and curious. Houses lean a little. Window boxes spill flowers. Nosy neighbors wave. Ruby closes her green notebook. Jay polishes his glass. Tomorrow they wait for the next case.
