Today is sunny on Maple Street. The Puzzle Patrol waits in the garden shed. Zoe, Marco, Kiki, and Waffles relax.
The phone rings in the shed. Miss Poppy says, Come quick to the library! The floor has wet prints. Today is sunny.
The friends hurry out because a mystery calls. Zoe brings her red magnifying glass. Kiki brings a flashlight. Marco brings his sketchbook.
The library floor is checkered and shiny. Wet prints sparkle under the ceiling lights. Miss Poppy is puzzled. Kiki shines her flashlight.
They look closely at the wet footprints. The prints are small and round. They go in circles, so Marco sketches them.
It was dry this morning. Miss Poppy looks around. Where does the water come from? Today is sunny, but the floor is wet.
They follow the prints past the story corner. The trail turns behind the big atlas shelf. Zoe whispers, We are close. I smell water.
They hear drip drip from the dark space. Kiki shines her flashlight behind the shelf. An orange tail flicks, then goes still.
There is Waffles, grumpy and dripping. He splashes in the garden fountain. Now he wants to hide. He is wet.
Waffles flops onto the wet trail and naps. His paws stamp perfect circles in the shine. Kiki smiles. They are paw prints, not footprints.
Zoe brings a soft towel from the desk. They dry Waffles carefully, so he stops dripping. They wrap him in a green burrito towel.
Zoe explains the circles to Miss Poppy. They mop the shiny checkered floor together. Miss Poppy laughs, because the mystery is kind.
Back in the shed, Marco draws paw prints. They stamp the blue casebook. They say, Case closed! They share apples and crackers with Waffles.
