Today on Maple Street, socks go missing. Washing lines show funny gaps and pins. Only left socks disappear, again and again.
Three friends form the Puzzle Patrol. Zoe, Marco, and Kiki work together. They meet in a small garden shed. They keep a blue casebook.
Neighbors call, worried about socks. It was here this morning! One sock, then three, then seven disappear. The Patrol asks questions on Maple Street.
They study the washing lines. Zoe checks pegs with her magnifying glass. Marco draws the gaps in his sketchbook. Kiki shines her flashlight under posts.
Waffles naps under a low line. He snores on something soft. Zoe lifts his belly and gasps. A black and white feather lies there.
Kiki finds a shiny bead nearby. Marco whispers, birds like shiny things. Zoe says, Maybe a bird takes socks. Left socks make a soft nest.
They set a gentle trap today. A bright stripy sock hangs alone. They wait behind the hedge with lemonade. Waffles curls up and sleeps.
The stakeout is long and quiet. They whisper and listen for wings. Marco writes notes in the blue casebook. Zoe draws the stripy sock.
At sunset, a young magpie swoops. It grabs the stripy sock. The friends follow softly down Maple Street. Waffles trots after them, still yawning.
The magpie flies to a tall chimney. Inside, a nest is warm with socks. Three chicks peep in golden light.
Neighbors see the nest and laugh kindly. They bring old socks from baskets. No one is bad in this mystery. The bird family stays safe.
Back in the shed, they stamp the casebook. Zoe says, Case closed! They share apples and cookies. Waffles gets a saucer of milk.
Yesterday, socks were gone and worries were big. Today, we understand why left socks vanish. The Puzzle Patrol can help tomorrow. Maple Street smiles.
