In The Wardrobe of Time, Ada steps from her grandmother's basement into Paris, 1864. She meets Louis Pasteur and sees his swan neck flasks, a microscope view of wriggling microbes, and gentle heating that keeps milk safe. Ada nearly drinks from the wrong beaker, learns hand washing like a scientist, and writes her clear idea: tiny microbes can cause sickness, and heat and cleanliness stop them.
